Why Is Cinco de Mayo Celebrated in the U.S. and Not in Mexico?

Cinco de Mayo commemorates La Batalla de Puebla, a battle in which the Mexican army defeated French forces on May 5th, 1862.

According to some historical accounts, Mexicans living in the United States at the time followed the news of the conflict and celebrated the victory.

But in Mexico, it was just one battle within a much larger war, so it never became a major national celebration.

Mexico’s Independence Day is actually on September 16th.
