Where Are the Marble Chapels Located?

Las Capillas de Mármol are a popular tourist spot located in Puerto Río Tranquilo, in the Aysén Region of Chile.

The nearest airport is about 120 miles (200 km) away. On the way there, you’ll enjoy the breathtaking landscapes of the Carretera Austral.

If you’re traveling from abroad, your first stop will be Santiago, where you’ll go through customs. From there, you can take a flight to Balmaceda Airport.

The Marble Chapels sit on Lago General Carrera, a lake shared by Argentina and Chile. Its indigenous name is Chelenko.

What’s the Best Time to Visit Puerto Río Tranquilo?

The best time to visit the Aysén region is from late November to early March. Patagonia has a cold climate, so for most of the year there’s snow and rain.

Accommodation Options

Puerto Río Tranquilo offers several options for travelers visiting this amazing spot.

You’ll find campsites, small hotels, and cabins. You can book online, but in my experience, you often get better rates by booking directly once you’re there.

What Does the Marble Chapels Tour Include?

Many companies by the lake offer tours to the Marble Chapels. Because there’s so much competition, you’ll often find better deals on‑site rather than booking online.

A basic group tour costs around USD $30, lasts about 2 hours, and takes you by boat around Lago General Carrera.

You’ll hear the story of the place, go inside the marble caves (formed naturally by water erosion), and visit the Marble Cathedral and Marble Chapel.

There are also options for kayak tours or private tours, but they come at an extra cost.

Do Locals Speak English?

Tour agencies and guides usually speak some English, just like in most tourist spots.

However, in local stores and restaurants, it’s very helpful to know basic Spanish for things like buying items or asking for recommendations.

Don’t expect most locals outside of the tourism industry to speak other languages.

Have fun on your next trip to the Aysén region!
