What Is the “Vos” Pronoun in Spanish?

As a Spanish learner, you’re probably familiar with the pronouns tú and usted, both used to say “you” in the singular form.

But did you know there’s A THIRD OPTION used in many parts of Latin America?

I’m talking about the pronoun VOS, a phenomenon known as voseo.

It’s the use of vos as the second-person singular pronoun to address friends or people you’re close to.

So… what exactly is vos? And how is it different from tú or usted?

That’s what this episode of Spanish Quickie (Spanish beginner podcast) is all about.

The History of Voseo in Latin America

The pronoun vos (singular “you”) was widely used during the Middle Ages among nobles in Spain as a formal way to address each other.

At that time, tú was used to speak to people of lower social status, such as servants or villagers.

Around the beginning of the 16th century, this distinction faded.

Vos and tú started being used interchangeably across social classes, and the prestige of vos slowly disappeared.

By the 17th century, usted emerged as the new polite form. As a result, vos gradually fell out of use in Spain.

But Spanish settlers in Latin America continued using vos (no internet back then!)

Over time, it became deeply rooted in the region.

Today, vos is still widely used in countries such as Argentina, Uruguay, Paraguay, Bolivia, Peru, Colombia, Chile, Costa Rica, Ecuador, Guatemala, Honduras, and Nicaragua.

How Vos Is Used Across Latin America

The use of vos isn’t the same everywhere. It carries different social meanings depending on the country.

Argentina 🇦🇷, Uruguay 🇺🇾, Paraguay 🇵🇾: Vos is the dominant form. It almost completely replaces tú, and you’ll see it in the news, on the radio, and in advertising.

Nicaragua 🇳🇮, Honduras 🇭🇳, Guatemala 🇬🇹: Vos and tú coexist. Vos signals closeness and is used with very close friends.

Chile 🇨🇱: Vos exists, but it’s considered very slangy and can be associated with uneducated speech.

Depending on where you travel, vos can feel normal, intimate, or super informal.

It’s always a good idea to learn how vos is used in the specific country you plan to visit.

How Is Vos Conjugated?

Here’s a quick comparison between vos and tú in the present tense.

The main difference is that the stress moves toward the end of the word.

Present Tense

comescomés
escribesescribís

These patterns appear across many verbs, making voseo surprisingly easy to recognize once you get used to the stress shift.

In Conclusion

The pronoun vos has gone through many changes in prestige and meaning throughout history.

While it disappeared from Spain, it survived in Latin America, taking on unique forms and cultural nuances in each country.

Vos traveled from Europe to the vibrant lands of Latin America… and it’s definitely here to stay.
