Family members

When learning Spanish, it’s important to know the vocabulary for talking about family. From your closest relatives to distant ones, understanding the words for all members of your family is essential. So, let’s dive into the show notes and learn some family vocabulary in Spanish!

First, let’s start with the basics:

  • Padre = father (also “papá”)
  • Madre = Mother (also “mamá”)
  • Padres = Parents
  • Hijo(a) = Son/Daughter
  • Hijos(as) =Children (you say “hijas” if they are all women)
  • Hermano(a) = Brother/Sister
  • Abuelo(a) = Grandfather/Grandmother
  • Tío(a) = Uncle/Aunt
  • Primo(a) = Cousin

Let’s continue with the “in-laws”

  • Suegro(a) = Father/Mother-in-law
  • Cuñado(a) = Brother/Sister-in-law
  • Yerno = Son-in-law
  • Nuera = Daughter-in-law

Possessive adjectives

Now, let’s look at some possessive adjectives that you can use when talking about family:

  • My: mi (singular) / mis (plural)
  • Your: tu (singular) / tus (plural)
  • His, Her: su (singular) / sus (plural)
