In a funny meme video, a guy talks about the ONLY WORD he remembers from his Spanish 1 and 2 classes: DELICIOSO.
Can you relate? 😅
Well, delicioso is definitely a solid choice to compliment your amigos’ cooking, but what other words can you use to describe flavors in Spanish?
That’s exactly what we’ll cover in this episode of Speaking Spanish for Beginners.

Delicioso/-a
Delicioso means something is super tasty, but it goes beyond just flavor. It describes an all-around amazing experience. It’s like saying, “This isn’t just good, it’s really good!”
Examples:
- Los mariscos de Chile son deliciosos. (Chilean seafood is delicious.)
- La comida está deliciosa. (The food is delicious.)
Use it when you want to give extra love to a dish!
Sabroso/-a
Derived from the word sabor (flavor), sabroso means “tasty” or “flavorful.”
It focuses more on the flavor itself rather than the overall experience. It’s like saying, “This tastes great!”—still a solid compliment, just a bit more casual than delicioso (and less strong too.)
Examples:
- Este pan está sabroso. (This bread is tasty.)
- La comida de Colombia es sabrosa. (Colombian food is flavorful.)
Rico/-a
While rico can mean “rich” when describing a wealthy person, when we’re talking about food, it means it’s really yummy.
It’s a more casual way of saying something is delicious and is super common in everyday conversations.
On a scale, rico lands between sabroso and delicioso. Not as fancy as delicioso, but still packs a punch!
Examples:
- ¡Qué rica la arepa! Me encanta. (The arepa is delicious! I love it.)
- ¡Qué rico este chocolate! (This chocolate is so good!)
What about “Guácala”?
If your amigos don’t like what they’re eating, you might hear them say guácala.
This is the Spanish version of “yuck!” It’s a strong way of saying something is really gross, so make sure you use it wisely to avoid hurting someone’s feelings!
We hope this episode helps you spice up your Spanish beyond just saying delicioso (like our meme friend 😄).
