Days of the Week in Spanish

For starters, “week” in Spanish is “la semana” and it’s a feminine noun. And “day” is “el día”, a masculine noun.

An important consideration is that days in Spanish are not capitalized; we just use lowercase in written texts, except if the day comes right after a period.

Additionally, the week in many Latino calendars starts on Monday and not Sunday as in the USA:

Let’s take a look at the names of the days:

• El lunes: Monday
• El martes: Tuesday
• El miércoles: Wednesday
• El jueves: Thursday
• El viernes: Friday
• El sábado: Saturday
• El domingo: Sunday

Using the Days in Your Sentences

Spanish days of the week have the same form in singular and plural, except for Saturday and Sunday.

Days “sábado” and “domingo” have an -s at the end in their plural form. 

• El lunes — Los lunes
• El sábado — Los sábados 

Days of the week are all masculine. 

Using the 7 days of the week in singular or plural can affect their meaning. Look at the following example:

• El martes voy al cine con mi novia (upcoming Tuesday, singular)
• Los martes voy al cine con mi novia (every Tuesday, plural)

You may have noticed too that we use the definite article, unlike English where days are used with a preposition. Compare:

• El viernes vamos al bar, ¿quieres venir? = On Friday we’re going to the bar, do you want to come?

Abbreviations for the Days in Spanish

The Spanish days of the week can be abbreviated in three ways:

• lun., mar., miérc., juev., vier., sáb., dom.
• L, M, X, J, V, S, D
• LU, MA, MI, JU, VI, SA, DO

Yep, for some reason the last two abbreviations are capitalized in Spanish. It is what it is.
